Vietnam and the 4-3-3 high press

A look at how Vietnam can press higher, seal the middle, and transition quickly against physical teams.

Pressing layers

Front line: the 9 forces the weaker CB, wingers lock full-backs, pushing play wide. Mid line: two tucked-in 8s create an 8-player press with a double pivot holding depth. Back line: CBs ready to spread for long balls, full-backs step inside as half-backs to secure second balls.

Wide traps & transitions

Wide trap forms when the winger presses inside and the full-back steps high to close half-space passes. On regain, the inside lane is free for one 8 to burst forward, while the 9 drops to open a channel for the far-side winger.

Operating conditions

  • Double pivot constantly checking shoulders to cover space behind the 8s.
  • Goalkeeper sweeping aggressively versus direct balls.
  • Use 15–20 minute pressing waves, drop to mid-block when leading.

Success indicators

PPDA down to 8–10 in first 15 minutes; at least 3 regains in the attacking third; 1–2 shots from transition in the first 10 minutes of each half.
